Hybrid GCSE student Ryan on path to career in film and tv
Former Derby College Group student Ryan Duggan is especially thrilled with his GCSE grade in Media – a subject he had never studied before.
Media is a good fit with his future learning as Ryan,17, is focused on a career in film and tv editing.
He did the hybrid GCSE Plus programme at Joseph Wright Centre and got good grades in all his exams, achieving 4s in Maths and English Literature, a 5 in English Language and a 6 in Media.
Ryan, from Mickleover, sat GCSEs at school last year but missed a lot of the curriculum due to ill health.
He didn’t get the results he wanted and wasn’t sure what to do next until his mum saw DCG’s hybrid programme online.
He said: “We came to a college enrolment day and I enrolled there and then – just a week before the course started. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like college or not but it’s been great.
“From going to London on cinema trips to watch the Hunger Games, to racing between college and my online lessons it’s been so much fun! I’d definitely recommend this course to others.”
One of the most enjoyable things about college, Ryan found, was ‘the relaxed environment and the feeling that your learning is in your own hands.’
He added: “I had a pretty good relationship with all my teachers; they’ve been awesome. I don’t think I’d have passed my exams without their support.”
Ryan loves film and television and taught himself to edit during the long periods when he wasn’t able to attend school.
He has now secured a place on a two-year level 3 film and tv course and hopes to work in the industry one day, possibly in editing.
He added: “It’s something that’s appealed to me for the past six years. I might go onto university after my level 3 or look for a job in film and tv.”
