Audrey is firmly focused on training for career in psychiatry
Derby College Group GCSE Plus student Audrey Mandaza has a clear idea of where she wants her learning to ultimately lead.
Audrey,17, wants to become a psychiatrist and has moved on to A-levels in Sociology, Psychology and Criminology with the college.
Originally from Zimbabwe, she plans to go on to higher education and take the additional courses she needs to achieve her ambition.
Audrey and younger brother Ashton only came to the UK in 2023 and both studied for their GCSEs at Joseph Wright Centre at the same time.
Audrey said: “College has been amazing. All my teachers have supported me so much, providing me with past test papers and other learning and revision resources.
“I do lot of reading at home and the support I’ve had from college has helped me so much with my independent study.
“If, for instance, I had a difficult question in chemistry, I always knew I could go to my teacher and she would explain the answer to me.”
Audrey’s main motivation to go into psychiatry comes from a strong desire to make a difference to people’s lives.
She said: “There are a lot of troubled people in the world – people who are lonely or feel like outsiders – and I want to be able to help them.
“To learn and understand what you are studying you need to be in a stable place and I feel very motivated by everyone around me – my family and my teachers – to work hard and stay focused.
“Everyone has their own destiny and I know what mine is.”
