Getting into hospitality and catering

  • Apprenticeships Available through Derby College, an apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering would allow you to gain work experience and relevant qualifications in areas such as catering, food and beverage service, front of house reception, housekeeping and hospitality supervision. For some apprenticeships, you will need GCSEs or Functional Skills in English and Maths.
  • Higher education There are degrees in subjects such as Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts. You can either take these full time after more advanced college courses or part time alongside a job.
  • Jobs You can go straight into some catering and hospitality roles, such as waiter or waitress, kitchen assistant or room attendant, with few or no qualifications at all. Once you are in post, you will usually receive on-the-job training from your employer. The training given in this industry is broad based. You will also learn transferable skills, such as teamwork and problem solving, which will be useful in any career.
