FE Early Career Framework
Module 1 – Managing Behaviour
Module overview
In this module you will explore the following:
Building a rapport and relationship in the classroom. In this theme you will explore ways to establish rapport, relationships, and professional boundaries early on. These are crucial to creating community in the classroom and promoting positive behaviours from the start. Building links with parents, carers, colleagues, and external services to gain a holistic insight into students’ circumstances and potential barriers. Steps we can take to promote a safe and secure classroom culture.
Policy, what is it and why is so important? In this theme we will analyse centre policy for behaviour, aligning this to the EIF. The importance of a full and deep knowledge of roles and responsibilities in a centre will enable you to manage behaviour effectively and signpost students to support should it be needed.
External factors which impact behaviour in the classroom. Develop empathy to wider issues which students face. Analyse some of the most common barriers to learning students face in the contemporary UK.
Internal factors such as teachers’ expectations. In this theme you will explore steps to effective teaching characteristics, learning how something as simple of non-verbal communication can have an impact. Evaluate the role of the teacher in the classroom and reflect on how a teacher’s expectations can influence classroom behaviour. You will generate ideas on how to change the learning environment to maximise positive behaviours and learning.
Motivation, rewards vs sanctions. Generate ideas for practical steps and strategy for motivating students. The use of both positive and negative rewards in the classroom, with relevant practical considerations. Respond to disruption in an effectively and timely manner.
