Who is this course for?
This apprenticeship is suitable for individuals who:
- Have an interest in maintaining the safety, integrity and effective operation of plant and equipment in industries like electricity generation, oil and gas refining, and pharmaceuticals.
- Are looking to work in roles such as Electrical Technician, Mechanical Technician, Control and Instrumentation Technician, Wind Turbine Technician, Electrical System and Process Control Technician, Electromechanical Technician, and Plant Operations Technician.
- Typically have three GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher, including Mathematics, English and Science, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Are willing to undertake a 36-42 month training programme to develop the core knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the role.
- Aim to achieve professional registration as an Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) by an appropriate professional engineering institution.
Entry Requirements
GCSEs in Maths and English grades 4-9 (C or above) or Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills.

What will you learn?
During this apprenticeship, you will learn the following skills and knowledge specific to each pathway:
Mechanical Pathway:
- Position, assemble, install and dismantle mechanical plant and equipment, such as pumps, valves, gearboxes and pipework.
- Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance on mechanical plant and equipment.
- Replace, repair or remove components in mechanical plant and equipment to ensure operational condition.
- Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in mechanical plant and equipment.
Electrical Pathway:
- Position, assemble, install and dismantle electrical plant and equipment, including motors, switchgear, cables and conductors.
- Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance on electrical plant and equipment.
- Replace, repair or remove components in electrical plant and equipment to ensure operational condition.
- Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in electrical plant and equipment.
Electro-mechanical Pathway:
- Position, assemble, install and dismantle integrated electromechanical power and control systems.
- Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance on integrated plant and equipment.
- Replace, repair or remove components within integrated plant and equipment to ensure operational condition.
- Diagnose and determine the cause of faults within integrated electromechanical power and control systems.
How will you learn?
Apprentices will attend College on a day release basis for three years depending on their prior learning. Year 1 will entail foundation skills building which will include hand fitting, mechanical assembly, fluid power and pneumatics and electrical wiring and testing. In Years 2 and 3 apprentices will study the Pearson Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge).
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to come equipped with the following personal protective equipment (PPE): safety boots, safety glasses and company workwear/overalls. Additionally, you are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper and/or a laptop.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods. This will include observations, completing job write-ups, question and answers, and witness testimonies from your employer.
The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship includes several key components:
- Knowledge Test: assessing the apprentice’s understanding of core knowledge areas such as health and safety, maintenance practices and engineering principles.
- Practical Observation: evaluating the apprentice’s ability to perform tasks and demonstrate skills in a real work environment.
- Technical Interview: conducted by an independent assessor, this interview focuses on the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours, using evidence from their portfolio.
- Portfolio of Evidence: a collection of documents and records that showcase the apprentice’s work and achievements throughout the apprenticeship.
- Professional Discussion: a structured discussion between the apprentice and the assessor to explore the apprentice’s knowledge and experience in more depth.

What is required from the employer in the workplace?
Apprentices will be required to attend all off-the-job training during term time to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard and complete their mandatory qualification. Employers will actively be involved in the 12-week review process and support target setting to develop the apprentices. Employers will provide support in preparing the apprentice for their End Point Assessment (EPA).
