Course Information for Students

This course is suitable if you have a keen interest in wood occupations, with a focus on site carpentry, and have met the entry requirements.

You need GCSE grade 4 or the equivalent in Mathematics and English.

Please note that, the content and course title may differ based on the government updates.

Core subjects:

The core subjects can be transferred to other construction courses, once achieved:

  • Health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • Principles of construction, building and communication

Trade specific subjects:

  • Basic carpentry and joinery skills
  • Care, maintenance and use of woodworking hand tools
  • Safe set-up and use of woodworking portable power tools
  • An introduction to technical drawing
  • Use of woodworking power tools and machinery, both hand-held and fixed
  • Timber technology
  • The principles of construction
  • Structural carpentry
  • Non-structural carpentry prior to plastering
  • Non-structural carpentry following plastering
  • Timber technology and the use of circular saws

Employers hosting work experience placements will be involved in elements of training and assessment as part of the course. Your training will focus on a synoptic assessment, which will test your ability in both practical and theory elements.

Tutorial

You will meet with your tutor on a regular basis and will cover topics that are beneficial towards helping to make you more employable. You also have the benefit of receiving 1-1 sessions designed to guide you towards the highest achievement as is possible.

Work experience

You will be expected to complete a minimum number of work experience hours.

You will learn on-site, in the classroom and in the practical workshop. There may be some requirement to complete work online, but this will be kept to a minimum. 

While we make every endeavour to run programmes as advertised, we reserve the right to cancel those which do not enrol sufficient numbers to make them viable.

You will need to supply your own basic stationery, notebook, padlock, safety footwear, work trousers and safety glasses. 

You will also be required to purchase a Derby College Group sweat shirt and polo shirt once you have started the course. 

As you progress through the course, there is an expectation that you will purchase a basic tool kit once you are settled into your studies.

A range of assessment methods will be used throughout the course:

  • A portfolio of ongoing training and assessment in both practical and theory work, which will be graded for quality and content
  • Synoptic assessment of both practical and theory within the first six months
  • Final skills assessment which will be graded against set criteria
  • Final knowledge assessment in the form of a multiple-choice exam

You can advance to further qualifications or progress your career within the construction industry. Potential options may include:

  • Apprenticeship
  • Employment in the construction industry
  • T-Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction (entry criteria will apply)
