Course Information for Students

The Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician apprenticeship is suitable for individuals who:

  • Are interested in the engineering and manufacturing sector, including industries like maritime, automotive, energy and general engineering maintenance.
  • Aspire to perform a multi-disciplinary role, managing or leading other technicians, and specialising in areas such as mechanical, electronic or electrical engineering.
  • Are prepared to offer engineering support, technical leadership and expertise in tasks like installation, refit, overhaul, upgrading, design and maintenance.
  • Can handle complex technical issues, provide customer liaison, and ensure work is completed to the required quality and safety standards.
  • Are willing to work flexibly, including potential shift work and being on-call to meet customer requirements.
  • GCSEs in Maths, English and Science grades 4-9 (C or above) or Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills.
  • A Level 3 knowledge qualification in Engineering such as a BTEC which must include Maths.

During the Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician apprenticeship, an apprentice will learn to:

  • Implement Safety Measures: define and enforce safety control measures for maintenance activities, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
  • Technical Analysis: collate, interpret and analyse technical information such as work procedures, design briefs and maintenance manuals.
  • Maintenance Planning: plan and guide maintenance activities, ensuring all necessary instructions, permits and resources are available.
  • Leadership in Maintenance: lead or undertake maintenance tasks, including modifications, repairs and upgrades, while providing technical and team leadership.
  • Inspection Activities: conduct inspections on equipment, checking pressures, flows, temperatures and material states.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: communicate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure maintenance operations meet agreed timescales.
  • Problem-Solving: address technical or process issues using a structured approach, escalating as necessary.
  • Documentation: generate and forward documentation to support future asset maintenance planning.
  • Process Improvement: review and suggest improvements to engineering and maintenance procedures for better efficiency and quality.

This apprenticeship provides a comprehensive skill set for a career in engineering maintenance.

Apprentices will attend College on a day release basis for two years to complete the Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ). Apprentices will also be assessed in the workplace, to build up a portfolio of evidence which will be presented for the End Point Assessment (EPA).  

You are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper and/or a laptop. 

You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods, this will include observations, completing job write-ups, question and answers and witness testimonies from your employer. You will complete assignments to achieve the HTQ.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship entails:

Overview

  • Purpose: To assess the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) at the end of their apprenticeship.
  • Duration: Typically 36 months of training followed by a six-month EPA period.
  • Grades: Fail, Pass, Merit, Distinction.

EPA Gateway Requirements

  • Achieved English and Mathematics qualifications.
  • Submission of a 500-word project brief.
  • Submission of a portfolio of evidence.
  • Passed any other qualifications listed in the occupational standard (e.g. Level 4 HNC in Engineering and Manufacturing Maintenance).

Assessment methods

Project with Report:

  • Complete a project and write a report (max 5000 words).
  • Prepare and present the project to an independent assessor.
  • Presentation with questions lasting at least 45 minutes.

Professional Discussion:

  • A 60-minute discussion with an independent assessor.
  • At least seven questions about the occupation.
  • Use of a portfolio of evidence to support answers.

You could advance to a:

  • Level 6 Electrical or Electronic Technical Engineer qualification
  • Level 6 Product Design and Development Engineer qualification
  • Standalone Engineering Degree

This apprenticeship is designed to meet the needs of various industries, providing comprehensive training and development for future engineering leaders.

Apprentices will be required to attend all off-the-job training during term time to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard and complete their mandatory qualification. Employers will actively be involved in the 12-week review process and support target setting to develop the apprentices. Employers will provide support in preparing the apprentice for their End Point Assessment (EPA).
