Who is this course for?
If you have a strong interest in caring for animals, this course will stand you in good stead for a rewarding career. You will build up your practical animal care skills looking after a variety of animals, as well as your confidence around written work, time management and communication skills.
Entry Requirements
You should have grade 1 in English and Maths or the equivalent and a sound interest in the area of study. You must have a reasonable level of fitness to be able to take part in the practical sessions. All applicants will be interviewed by an Animal Care member of staff to make sure the course is right for you.
What will you learn?
You will learn about animals in the wild and pet animals, while developing your literacy, IT and numeracy. You will work practically with a wide variety of animals on our animal unit. We will also work on teamwork skills and on a variety of projects to develop your study and employment skills.

How will you learn?
You will have at least three practical sessions a week, working on our animal unit. You will also have one theory-based animal care lesson and an employability session. Also on your timetable you will have an academic tutorial and a character education tutorial. In addition, you will study towards Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths if you have not achieved a grade 4 (C) or the equivalent.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
•Derby College Group green lab coat (information on where to buy these will be given at enrolment)
•Closed-toe flat steel toe-capped shoes/boots/wellingtons
•Derby College Group polo and sweatshirt
•Writing materials
Long hair is to be tied back and no nail varnish, false or long nails, ripped clothing, fake eyelashes or jewellery (including piercings) should be worn while on practical lessons. These rules are non-negotiable.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed through your attendance in classes and in-class tasks, both practical and written.
Where next?
If you do well on this course, it may be possible to progress to a Level 1 Diploma in Animal Care. You must attend well, have good reports from staff and complete all tasks required to be able to progress to the Level 1 Diploma.
This course can help you progress to a traineeship, apprenticeship or employment in the animal industry.
