Who is this course for?
This apprenticeship is suitable for individuals who:
- Aspire to work in engineering design in various roles such as Electrical Power Design Technician, Control and Instrumentation Design Technician, Mechanical Design Technician, Piping Design Technician, and Structural Design Technician.
- Have an interest in producing engineering designs and drawings, including creating designs for components, structures and systems used in industrial and commercial construction.
- Are detail-oriented and enjoy technical work, including understanding technical models, drawings and specifications, and producing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and engineering drawings.
- Can work both independently and as part of a team, delivering effective communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Are committed to health, safety and environmental standards, understanding on-site hazards and complying with relevant legislation and regulations
- Seek professional development: the apprenticeship aligns with professional recognition from institutions like IMechE, ICE, IET and iED for Engineering Technician status.
Entry Requirements
GCSEs in Maths and English grades 4-9 (C or above) or Level 2 Maths and English Functional Skills.

What will you learn?
By doing this apprenticeship, you will learn to:
- Produce engineering designs and drawings: creating designs for components, structures and systems used in industrial and commercial construction.
- Use Computer Aided Design (CAD): developing skills in using CAD software to produce detailed models and drawings.
- Understand technical specifications: interpreting technical models, drawings and specifications to meet customer design requirements.
- Evaluate design options: supporting the identification, analysis and evaluation of factors affecting technical designs and contributing to developing engineering concepts.
- Communicate effectively: maintaining working relationships and communicating design information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Comply with health, safety and environmental standards: understanding on-site hazards and adhering to relevant legislation and regulations.
How will you learn?
Apprentices will attend College on a day-release basis for three years depending on their prior learning. Year 1 will entail foundation skills building which will include hand fitting, mechanical assembly, fluid power and pneumatics, and electrical wiring and testing. In Years 2 and 3 apprentices will study the Pearson Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development knowledge).
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to come equipped with the following personal protective equipment (PPE): safety boots, safety glasses and company workwear/overalls. Additionally, you are expected to bring note-taking equipment, such as a pen, paper and/or a laptop.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods. This will include observations, completing job write-ups, question and answers and witness testimonies from your employer.
The End Point Assessment (EPA) for the Engineering Design Technician Level 3 apprenticeship involves:
- Purpose: The EPA assesses the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) at the end of their apprenticeship.
- Assessment Methods:
- Project with Report: Complete a project, write a report (max 3000 words) and present it. The presentation includes at least five questions from the assessor.
- Interview: An interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence, lasting at least 60 minutes with at least nine questions.
- Multiple-Choice Test: A closed-book test with 35 questions, to be completed in 70 minutes.
- Gateway Requirements: Achieve necessary qualifications in English and Mathematics, submit a project summary, and provide a portfolio of evidence.
- Grading: The overall grades available are fail, pass, merit and distinction.

Apprenticeship summary
This apprenticeship is designed to develop skilled engineering design technicians who can contribute to various industries of national importance, including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear, renewables, food and drink processing, defence, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

What is required from the employer in the workplace?
Apprentices will be required to attend all off-the-job training during term time to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the standard and complete their mandatory qualification. Employers will actively be involved in the 12-week review process and will support target setting to develop their apprentices. Employers will also provide support in preparing the apprentice for their End Point Assessment (EPA).
