Land-based Studies in Animal Care – Level 1 Diploma
This course enables you to learn about animals in the wild and society, while developing your literacy, IT and numeracy. You will work practically with a wide variety of animals on our animal unit.

Who is this course for?
If you have a strong interest in caring for animals, this course will stand you in good stead for a rewarding career.
Entry Requirements
You should have grade 2 in GCSE English and Maths or the equivalent and a sound interest in the area of study. All applicants will be interviewed and will undertake an initial assessment in English and maths. It is expected that students will have a good level of fitness to be able to participate in the practical elements of the course.
What will you learn?
Animal Care modules:
- Health and Safety in land-based industries
- Prepare to work in land-based Industries
- Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
- Animals in the wild and their main features
- Assist with feeding and watering animals
- Assist with preparing and maintaining animal accommodation
- Assist with the handling and restraint of animals
Also on your timetable:
- GCSE or Functional Skills Maths and English (if you have not achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE)
- Academic Tutorial
- Character Education Tutorial
You will also complete 60 hours of work experience in the animal care industry in two block weeks during term-time.
How will you learn?
You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence reflecting your achievements throughout the course, including written assignments and practical assessments and to take an online multiple-choice test towards the end of the course. There will be at least two practical lessons on the animal unit a week, with the remainder being classroom delivery. This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
- Derby College Group green lab coat
- Closed-toe flat steel toe-capped shoes/boots/wellingtons
- Derby College Group polo and sweatshirt
- Writing materials
Information on where to buy these will be given at enrolment.
Long hair is to be tied back and no nail varnish, false nails, ripped clothing, fake eyelashes or jewellery (including piercings) should be worn while on practical lessons. These rules are non-negotiable.

Further Study
If you do well on this course, it may be possible to progress to a Level 2 Diploma or Level 2 Certificate. You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to advance to the Level 2 Diploma and a Pass grade to progress to the Level 2 Certificate.
