Who is this course for?
The main purpose of a retailer is to assist customers when they purchase products and services, which requires a good understanding of the stock being sold and the variety of ways customers can shop as well as the ability to process payments, for example using a till. Retailers must be passionate about delivering a quality service that always aims to exceed customers’ expectations.
Entry Requirements
You should be working in an operational role within the industry to start on this apprenticeship standard.
You should have Maths and English GCSE graded A-D or relevant industry experience.

How will you learn?
The apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be provided with any Personal Protective Equipment required to legally and safely undertake your role.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed throughout your programme via observations, witness testimonies, work products and questioning.
At end-point assessment, you will be required to complete:
- A 30-minute on-demand multiple choice test
- A two-hour observation of your knowledge, skills and behaviours
- A one-hour structured meeting led by the independent end-point assessor, involving you and your employer.
Where next?
You can progress to a further apprenticeship programme such as Retail Team Leader Level 3.

Apprenticeship summary

Retailers must be passionate about delivering a quality service that always aims to exceed customers’ expectations.
Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?
The apprentice should be working in an operational role within the industry to start on this apprenticeship standard.
The apprentice should have Maths and English GCSE graded A-D or relevant industry experience.
What is required from the employer in the workplace?
As an employer working with Derby College Group, you will be required to offer support and guidance to ensure that the apprentice can achieve the qualification. The apprentice will be required to build on the skills learnt in College and while in the workplace.
The employer will be required to be involved in all learning reviews and to set work objectives for the apprentice so that they can achieve the qualification.
If the apprentice is required to complete Functional Skills, they may need to attend block release at College.

Will my apprentice need to come into college?
The apprenticeship can be delivered fully in the workplace. However, 20% of the apprentice’s time must be spent on off-the-job training.
Is there any specialist equipment required?
You will need to provide your apprentice with any PPE required to legally and safely undertake their role.
What progression can my apprentice expect after completion of their apprenticeship?
The apprentice can progress to the Apprenticeship in Retail Team Leader Level 3.
