A level student Monika inspired to consider teaching maths at college
Maths undergraduate Monika Burtniece has been so inspired by her Derby College A levels tutors that she wants to become a college lecturer herself.Monika, who is in her first year of a mathematics degree at Nottingham Trent University, plans to go on to study for a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) so she can teach maths. Her ambition once she has graduated is to lecture at an FE college, hopefully in the East Midlands and maybe even at the Joseph Wright Centre.Originally from Latvia, Monika, who is now 18, moved to Derby three years ago. Despite English not being her first language, she achieved grade A in A level English Language/Literature as well as A grades in maths and film studies.Monika, who is the first person in her family to go to university, loves her degree course but looks back fondly on her time at Joseph Wright. She said:
I loved college and still miss it so much. I miss the teaching staff, the rooms, everything about it. It felt like home. "
I'd definitely recommend Derby College for A levels. I'd also advise that when it comes to choosing your A level subjects pick the ones you're passionate about – not the subjects your parents think you should do. If you choose to study the things you like you'll enjoy the work much more and do well.
