National construction business The Horbury Group is so impressed with the quality of Derby College's plastering apprenticeship course that it wants to take on more trade apprentices via the college this year. The Rotherham-based company recruited Derbyshire plastering apprentice Brad Peters last July and now has plans to extend further similar opportunities to four more Derby College Apprentices in 2017.

A wide range of local businesses joined an event organised by Derby College to reiterate to students the importance of English and maths in the workplace.

Employers ranging from hairdressing to construction organised practical activities at the event at the Roundhouse to highlight how their staff use English and maths in their jobs.

Broomfield Hall Lambing Sunday

Visitors to Derby College's Broomfield Hall campus in Morley on Sunday March 26 between 11am and 3pm will have the chance to meet the new-born lambs and other animals who are cared for by students at the College.

The country’s largest supplier and manufacturer of precast concrete solutions is broadening its skills base by taking on Derby College apprentices.

Rapidly expanding FP McCann employs around 120 people at its Weston Underwood site and has tripled in size since 2010. Currently it employs more than 1,300 staff at 12 sites in the UK and Northern Ireland.

Prince’s Trust Team In Line For National Award

Staff from Derby College and a group of local young people have reached the finals of the Prince's Trust annual Celebrate Success awards which will be presented at the London Palladium on March 15 and hosted by television presenters Ant and Dec.

The team, who were based at the College's Ilkeston campus for their 12-week Prince's Trust programme last year, won the regional finals for their community work to support SV2 in Derby which provides counselling and support for victims of sexual violence. They are now in line for the national Team Award.

Derby College Celebrates Higher Education Successes

Higher Education students at Derby College came under the spotlight at an awards ceremony at the Roundhouse to celebrate their success. The keynote speaker was Peter Dawber, Dean of Nottingham Trent University's School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment who talked about his career and stressed the importance of lifelong learning.

Derby-born screenwriter Lucinda Coxon recently met with Derby College Creative Media students at the Joseph Wright Centre to talk about her career as an award-winning writer for film, television, and stage. Ms Coxon’s feature screenplays include the Oscar winning The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, Wild Target, starring Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, and Rupert Grint; and The Heart of Me, starring Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Williams, and Paul Bettany.

A Derby recruitment consultancy has grown his business with the appointment of a digital marketing apprentice – further strengthening its working links with Derby College. Sky Recruitment Solutions, based at Riverside Chambers in the Cathedral Quarter, has appointed Max Pitt (18) from Duffield through the College's apprenticeship recruitment and training programme.

Personal trainer Jess Guest is the latest young person to land her ideal job thanks to a sports and leisure apprenticeship with Derbyshire Dales District Council. Jess, who is 18 and from Morton, now works full-time at Arc Leisure in Matlock after studying via Derby College while gaining valuable on-site work experience.

Derby College is expanding the range of work experience and potential job and apprenticeship opportunities for Construction learners in partnership with even more local employers. The College is partnering Bell Group to launch an Employer Academy focusing on painting and decorating skills.
