Cricketing Students Gear Up For National Finals

Members of the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy based at Derby College's Broomfield campus have reach the national finals of a colleges' indoor cricket competition. The team recently won the East Midlands AoC Sport (Association of College's) regional competition which was hosted by Derby College.

Derby College's agriculture apprentice Mike Bosworth (23) has won a place in the finals of the National Shepherd Association's Young Shepherd competition after winning a bronze medal in the regional heats.

A wide range of organisations from across the county exhibited at a series of events for students at Derby College campuses to promote health and wellbeing. The events were organised by the Derby College Students' Union at the Roundhouse, Broomfield Hall and Ilkeston campuses.

School Pupils Complete Construction Skills Challenges

Twenty four pupils from six local schools competed in three different construction skills challenges organised by staff and students at Derby College. Pupils from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Ashbourne; John Flamsteed Community School, Denby; The Ecclesbourne School in Duffield, Merrill Academy in Alvaston; Murray Park Community School in Mickleover and Allestree Woodlands competed in Brickwork, Painting and Decorating and Plastering challenges.

German Visit Focuses on Renewable Energy

Fifty students from Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre will be heading to Germany later this month to gain an insight into the pioneering use of renewable energy sources. The trip has been organised by Nottingham-based SASIE Ltd, one of the UK’s leading renewable energy installation, engineering and training organisations as part of its Employer Academy initiative with the College to raise awareness of the expanding career opportunities in the industry.

Derby College Students Support Ramathon

Public Services students at Derby College will be turning out in force to help organisers of the annual Ramathon in June. Around 100 students, who are based at the College's Broomfield Hall campus, will be supporting the annual Derby half marathon, business team run and mini Ramathon fun run which will be held on Sunday June 4.

Derby College is further developing its plans to create an Institute of Technology for Engineering and Professional Construction following the announcement of a Government cash boost for the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership area. The Institute is part of the £63million allocation for the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire areas which is designed to help create jobs, build homes, raise productivity, support businesses and encourage economic growth.

Women In Construction

Derby College is bringing together leading women who work in the construction industry for an event to inspire students to follow their lead. The event will be held at the Roundhouse on Wednesday March 8 which is International Women's Day and part of National Apprenticeship Week.

National construction business The Horbury Group is so impressed with the quality of Derby College's plastering apprenticeship course that it wants to take on more trade apprentices via the college this year. The Rotherham-based company recruited Derbyshire plastering apprentice Brad Peters last July and now has plans to extend further similar opportunities to four more Derby College Apprentices in 2017.

A wide range of local businesses joined an event organised by Derby College to reiterate to students the importance of English and maths in the workplace.

Employers ranging from hairdressing to construction organised practical activities at the event at the Roundhouse to highlight how their staff use English and maths in their jobs.

Broomfield Hall Lambing Sunday

Visitors to Derby College's Broomfield Hall campus in Morley on Sunday March 26 between 11am and 3pm will have the chance to meet the new-born lambs and other animals who are cared for by students at the College.

The country’s largest supplier and manufacturer of precast concrete solutions is broadening its skills base by taking on Derby College apprentices.

Rapidly expanding FP McCann employs around 120 people at its Weston Underwood site and has tripled in size since 2010. Currently it employs more than 1,300 staff at 12 sites in the UK and Northern Ireland.
