A wide range of businesses and organisations joined an event organised by Derby College to reiterate to students the importance of English and maths in the workplace.

Employers ranging from the Army and Derbyshire Cricket Club to the National Trust and Derby Museum and Art Gallery organised practical activities at the event at the Broomfield Hall campus to highlight how their staff use English and maths in their jobs.

Derby Museums Financial Director Mo Suleman said: "Maths and English are vital to any organisation. For us, financial information drives all the business decisions that we make and the students have been very responsive to the activities.

"I hope that we have been able to show them how important this is and some tips on how to put the information together in an understandable format."

Derby College's Director of English and Maths Jody Seaton concluded: "This has been a very successful event and we are grateful for the input from employers.

"Many young people think that they will leave English and maths behind when they start a job or apprenticeship but the message that these skills will be a vital part of their careers for the rest of their working lives has come across loud and clear."
