Derby firm YMD Boon Commits to Mentoring Local Students

Architecture and construction consultancy YMD Boon has become a member of Derby College's Employment and Skills Academy (ESA), which aims to nurture learners as they move from education to employment.

The ESA offers learners a mentoring service including access to professionals within an industry they are interested in, specialist career talks, visits to workplaces and access to work experience placements.

YMD Boon, which has an office on Pride Park, wanted to support a local project and has a particular interest in education, making the ESA a great fit with the ethos of the company.

Through the progarmme, YMD Boon has recently appointed a student as an architectural technician - illustrating the success of the scheme in providing relevant jobs to young people.

Director Shari Setayesh, said: "Like many firms we raise funds each year for a number of charities, but I wanted to actually get involved in a programme of activity that was close to my heart and I've always enjoyed working with and mentoring young people. Derby College's ESA is a practical solution to supporting students as they navigate the transition from full-time education to employment which can be a daunting time. I'm already enjoying being involved in the ESA and with the recent appointment of one of the students in our team, I am seeing the tangible benefits it can bring to students.

Being a member of ESA is voluntarily and YMD Boon will dedicate time and resources to a student work placement, run mock interviews and give career advice including CV creation and sit on the ESA advisory board.

Derby College's Deputy Principal, Employer and Economic Affairs April Hayhurst said: "Our Employment and Skills Academy is designed to ensure all Derby College learners are prepared to make a smooth transition from education to employment and meet the needs of employers. Students will follow a journey of learning at Derby College and take part in an extra programme of employer engagement activities. This unique combination of learning and employer engagement ensures that our learners gain the skills, attitudes and knowledge employers need from young people in the work place. It's essential we have business support to make this a success and its down to companies like YMD Boon who help to nurture young individuals giving them great start to their career."

The ESA offers young people mentoring across many industries including construction, engineering, creative arts, hospitality, public services and health and social care.
