A Derby College Construction Apprentice is laying the foundations for a successful career in the building industry.

Jordan Richards from Ilkeston, works at Derby-based firm G F Tomlinson and is celebrating after scooping a prestigious industry award. He was awarded a regional Guild of Bricklayers award.

Jordan competed in the junior and senior categories of the competition hosted by Burton and South Derbyshire College.

Jordan said: "I'm thrilled to have won the regional competition. There were lots of other really great apprentices who entered the event, so I'm so pleased to have won and to now go on to the regional final. I love working as a bricklayer alongside the G F Tomlinson team and would definitely encourage others who are interested in a career in the construction industry to go for it!"
Jordan will now go on to compete at the national finals in Devon, which take place in June.

During the competition, Jordan joined the other learners who were presented with drawings and the apprentice bricklayers then had six hours to reproduce a live brickwork model which were then judged by the panel. However, it's not Jordan's first success at a bricklaying competition. He has also won Apprentice of the Year at Derby College's Peak Awards and was a winner in CITB's junior Skill Build competition.

Kevin Dodds, framework divisional manager for G F Tomlinson, praised Jordan's budding building skills. He said: "We're incredibly proud of Jordan. He continues to not only dazzle us all here at G F Tomlinson with his bricklaying skills, but also industry professionals at the competitions he has entered. I'd like to thank Jordan for all the hard work and dedication he is putting into his apprenticeship. The Guild of Bricklayers is a very prestigious competition, so he has done extremely well and we wish him all the best for the final."
