Travel
Transport makes a significant contribution to DCG’s carbon footprint, which is why we aim to use the most sustainable transport methods wherever possible. Currently, approximately 11% of our staff commute to work by walking, cycling or wheeling, while around 10% use public transport. On average, members of staff travel around 7 miles to get to work.
Reducing emissions from staff travel is therefore an important area of focus in our journey towards net zero.
Co‑benefits of sustainable travel
Sustainable travel choices can deliver a range of wider benefits alongside reducing carbon emissions:
Active travel, such as walking and cycling, helps improve physical fitness, boosts mental wellbeing and can reduce stress by incorporating exercise naturally into daily routines.
Public transport use helps reduce the number of vehicles on the road, lowering emissions and easing congestion. It can also help avoid the frustrations of commuter traffic, save money on fuel, and reduce the stress associated with car parking.
Sustainable Travel Hierarchy
We encourage staff to use the Sustainable Travel Hierarchy when planning their journeys, to help make the most sustainable and appropriate travel choices. This applies to commuting as well as travel undertaken as part of work, such as trips with students, conferences, and external meetings.
