Employer Academies

Derby College has teamed up with a host of local businesses to launch an innovative Employer Academy programme.

Learners enrolled on Engineering, Business, IT, Construction, Sports, Hospitality, Care and Professional Cookery will have the opportunity to be aligned to an Academy programme.

The following Employer Academies are so far confirmed with more to be announced:

They are:

Atlas Building and Groundworks Academy:

Focusing on the multi-skills required for the groundworks industry to support construction learners into an apprenticeship.

Cricket Derbyshire Hospitality Academy:

Focusing on the food and beverage service skills required for the hospitality/conference and events industry.

Cricket Derbyshire Sports Academy:

Providing sports learners with opportunities to work with professional coaches in the elite performance centre of a first class cricket club.

epm:technology Advanced Composites Academy:

Introducing engineering learners to the rapidly expanding advanced composites manufacturing industry through a market leader in the Formula 1 supply chain.

First Response Business and Finance Academy:

Focussing on work experience in various departments within First Response including business development, sales and marketing, finance and IT to boost learner’s employability skills in business and finance related companies.

Huub Marketing and Product Development Academy:

Enabling business learners to be involved with a multi award winning and fast growing company designing sportswear for international markets.

Derby Telegraph Media Sales

Giving business learners a unique insight into the demanding work of media sales and marketing.

The Finesse Collection Professional Cookery Academy:

With Catering and Hospitality learners working alongside top chefs at the Cathedral Quarter Hotel, Donington Manor Hotel and at the host of events handled by the company’s outdoor catering division Finesse Hospitality.

Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Academy:

To broaden young people’s career opportunities in healthcare. Linking with the super hospital, a major employer in Derby

Each Employer Academy will:

    Enable Learners to interact with professional persons within specific Industries, related to their study programme, through:
  • Specialist speakers
  • Work place visits or industry relevant visits
  • One-day a week Work Placements
  • Project work; designed by the Employer
  • Attend industry specific master classes
  • Obtain real and transferrable employability skills, knowledge and practical experience
  • Have the opportunity to gain paid part-time work
  • All learners will have a guaranteed interview at the end of the course for a job or apprenticeship opportunities.

The Employer will be able to:

  • Contribute to the course content to ensure industry relevant material is delivered and taught to the learners
  • Mould the learners with real employability skills, knowledge and practical experience – suited to the employer
  • Provide the Learners with company specific uniform, therefore easily identified as being part of particular Employer Academy
  • Interview the learners at the end of their course for Apprenticeship opportunities within the Employer Academy’s company
  • Take part in developing and designing the curriculum to meet their specific company needs, this could include induction training, health and safety awareness and teaching cultural values
  • Raise awareness of their organisation and the career opportunities for young people
  • Reduce the cost of training
  • Reduce the cost of recruitment
  • Develop existing staff skills knowledge through mentoring programmes

The Partnership will include:

  • Continuous promotion of the Employer Academies via all available channels through both Derby College and the Employer Academy – this will include targeting and informing Learners of this opportunity during the College’s enrolment period
  • Monthly review / progress meetings of the Academy and of the Learners
  • An official launch of all Employer Academy’s at the end of September
  • Various Employer Academy Celebration events throughout the Academic Year, Christmas, Spring and End of Year

We can provide you with hospitality staff to cover casual shifts, flexible hours from our enthusiastic and employable student cohort. We already work with a number of large hospitality and event organisations in Derby to supply them with staff in the following areas:

  • Bar Staff – must be age 18+
  • Drink Service – Bar to table service
  • Glass collectors – Tables and pre drinks bar
  • Food service - Waiting on Tables
  • Event set up – preparing venue for service
  • Kitchen work – preparing food
  • Porters – in kitchen
