Getting into Travel and Tourism

travel

  • Full time at College There is a range of full-time Travel and Tourism courses at Derby College, with different entry points depending on your GCSE results.
  • Apprenticeships These are available in areas including travel agency work, tourist information and occasionally aviation operations on the ground. For some apprenticeships, you might need GCSEs or Functional Skills in English and Maths.
  • Higher education You could develop your career by completing higher level qualifications such as a foundation degree, HNC, HND or degree. These courses can cover Tourism Management, Events Management, Marketing or a range of other disciplines.
  • Jobs Roles in this industry include air cabin crew, airline customer service assistants, cruise ship stewards, event managers, tour operators, travel agents, tourist information professionals, holiday centre/hotel managers and even jobs at major tourist attractions such as Disneyland. It is worth noting that more people are booking holidays and flights online, so the advice sought on holidays is now more specialist.

You can start work as a trainee in travel and tourism and do further training on the job. However, employers may be seeking previous experience of customer service and the ability to speak a foreign language could be an advantage. For careers like air cabin crew, you will need to be over 18 – some airlines state over 21. Most have a minimum height and weight requirement but this can also vary.

Helping turn holiday dreams into reality is a truly rewarding job. With a Travel and Tourism course at Derby College, you can map out your future in one of the most popular career destinations of all.

Daniel Johnston

Daniel Johnston

Taking off with a cabin crew career

High-flier Daniel Johnston clinched a cabin crew job with Ryanair – even before completing his Derby College course!

Always interested in seeing more of the world, he progressed so well on the Air Cabin Crew Diploma that he was ideally prepared for the highly competitive Ryanair recruitment process.

Having embarked on his learning journey in 2013, Daniel was amazed at how many unusual opportunities his course offered.

One highlight was a day at the British Airways Training Centre at Heathrow – learning about safety procedures, undertaking role plays in a mock crash simulator and trying out an evacuation slide. Another was a fire training course at East Midlands Airport.

I’ve always wanted to travel – cabin crew is my dream job. When I first joined Derby College, I saw the Diploma as a qualification which could probably lead to a job a few years down the line. Then I got a job before I’d even finished College!

I’d like to move into visual merchandising one day but at the moment I enjoy what I do and M&S is a great business to work for.

Working with Ryanair will open up so many doors for my future but I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of the College.
