Getting into Professional Construction

  • Full-time at College There is a wide range of full-time Construction courses offered at Derby College, preparing you for jobs in architecture, building surveying, civil engineering, quantity surveying, site managing and structural engineering.
  • Apprenticeships These are available with Derby College in many areas of Professional Construction with small and large local companies. You will be working full-time in industry, including one full day of study at College. You will need GCSEs including English, Maths and Science.
  • Higher education To do some jobs in the construction industry, such as architect, civil engineer or quantity surveyor, you will need a degree, foundation degree or HND. You can study full time at university or part time alongside a job. Derby College itself offers a HNC in Construction and the Built Environment as well as a Foundation Degree in Construction Management.
  • Jobs You could take a skilled and professional job in the construction industry and may be looking to achieve a professional chartered status in the future.

You will benefit from our close ties with employers across the sector, expert teaching by industry-experienced professionals and exceptional learning facilities.

Maths and English

You need English and maths skills to get on in life. They will support your studies at the College, help with everyday tasks and pave the way to future career success.

If you don’t already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths – or equivalent qualifications – you will continue studying these subjects as part of your course at Derby College.

Surveying a bright future in construction

Joining the Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment gave Jonathan Barcz a real head start in his career as a quantity surveyor.

Jonathan is one of the talented learners who have benefited from our Professional Construction Employment and Skills Academy, which offers work placements and mentoring support from local employers.

The opportunities led to him securing an apprenticeship at UK Construction in Derby and he is now studying the part-time BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying at Nottingham Trent University, sponsored by his company.

Jonathan was also named the Professional Construction Learner of the Year at our 2014 Peak Awards, thanks to his focused approach to his studies and his outstanding marks.

I’m so pleased that I joined the Derby College Employment and Skills Academy which opened so many doors for me and has given me the opportunity to work and continue my education in this profession.
