Curriculum

Sustainability is a core part of learning at DCG, with green skills embedded as a mandatory element across all courses. As environmental responsibility becomes increasingly central to every career, equipping learners with these skills has never been more important. Low Carbon Heating Apprentices

Low Carbon Heating Apprentices

DCG is proud to have delivered the UK’s first Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship in 2023, developed in partnership with Vaillant.

As part of His Majesty King Charles III’s Royal Apprenticeships, the programme equips learners with the skills required to install and maintain the latest heat pumps and low-carbon heating technologies for homes and businesses.

It directly responds to growing national demand for qualified installers needed to meet government ambitions for heat pump deployment.

The apprenticeship has continued to run each year since its launch and is a strong example of how DCG is supporting the development of green skills and creating clear pathways into sustainable careers.

Level 2 Understanding Climate Change and Sustainable Development Course

DCG has developed its own Level 2 qualification in Understanding Climate Change and Sustainable Development, available free of charge to all staff and students. This four‑hour online course provides learners with a clear understanding of the challenges posed by climate change, its impacts on society and industry, and the role individuals and organisations can play in driving sustainable change. The course explores action at national, regional, and local levels, supporting learners to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to contribute to a more sustainable future.

National Sustainability in Sport Award

Derby College Group (DCG) has been honoured with the National Sustainability in Sport Award at the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport Awards for the second consecutive year. This recognition highlights DCG’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint through sustainable sports practices, such as using recycled gym equipment and flooring, participating in the Planet Earth Games to promote health and sustainability, and engaging students in environmental activities like litter picking. The college also embeds environmental education within its sports curriculum, ensuring learners understand and apply sustainability principles.
