Course Summary

Our Certificate in Communication Support for Deaf Learners offers you a part-time qualification route to working with deaf learners in the FE and Skills sector. 

You will attend College one Saturday per month for 12 months and you will need access to 40 hours or more work-placement hours during the course.  This qualification is especially suitable for those who wish to become a qualified Communication Support Worker or Learning Assistant with deaf learners. 

You will study eight modules at Level 3, which provide an excellent toolkit for preparing and providing support, and the course develops your skills in reflecting on, and developing, your work.  You will be observed over the year by your tutor and will be involved in personal and professional action planning.

You will have a considerable amount of work to do outside of the classroom setting and will be expected to create a work-placement log and complete reflective journal entries. Emphasis is placed on developing your reflective skills so that you exit as a reflective practitioner with knowledge of your own strengths and areas for development.

Entry requirements

You should be aged 19+ and will need evidence of:

  • Level 2 in English and Maths
  • Level 2 in BSL
  • Access to at least 40 hours support in paid or voluntary work in FE and/or schools

How will I be assessed?

There is a variety of written academic assignments along with a presentation and role play to complete, as well as a short exam. In addition you will have observations over the one-year period, which you will plan for and evaluate. 

All assignments, observations, planning, reflections and the role play will be graded against the Exam Board’s learning outcomes and specifications. 

You must pass all elements to be able to gain the full qualification.  You will enter all documentation into a portfolio to be submitted for marking and external verification at the end of the course.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will provide your own stationery.

What can I do after this course?

·Gain employment as a communication support worker or learning assistant with deaf learners

·Progress to a degree in Communication Support Work or Deaf Studies

·Consider further training in associated subjects such as note-taking, lipspeaking, interpreting, and/or language modification

IMPORTANT: our courses require a minimum of 14 enrolments to run.  You will be notified two weeks prior to the start date if the course is NOT going to run.

Career swap part-time student lands teachers’ job

Part-time postgraduate student Louise Rae Allen says Derby College helped her land the teaching job she longed for from childhood.
Psychology graduate Louise, 29, from Ambergate, was taken on by Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Ashbourne while she works towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Louise, who has dreamed of being a teacher from the age of 11, switched direction after working for five years as a careers co-ordinator at Queen Elizabeth.
She chose the course because it gave her the flexibility to study part-time, while continuing to work, and because of the strong reputation of its tutors. In 2016, the college achieved an "Outstanding" Ofsted rating for PGCE provision.
Louise is completing a two year part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education, Post 14 in Compulsory Education.

She said: "I'm sure I wouldn't have been taken on as a teacher without taking the course.
