Course Summary

This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to gain a nationally recognised qualification in event security operations.

The objective of the qualification is to prepare learners for employment as an event steward.

The qualification provides learners with knowledge, understanding and skills in health and safety, responding to a variety of situations during events, managing movement of spectators, managing conflict situations, responding to emergencies, and providing information and advice.

In addition to the mandatory content, there are optional topics that provide flexibility in meeting both learner and employer needs.

Entry requirements

In order to register for this qualification, learners are required to meet the following entry requirements:

  • A good level of English and mathematics

There is an underlying expectation that learners will take the opportunities offered to them to demonstrate their learning practically at events throughout the duration of their course.

Course Content

In order to achieve the qualification, learners must achieve:

  • All units within the mandatory group totalling 18 credits
  • A minimum of two credits from optional group A.

Mandatory group

  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • How to respond to occurrences during an event
  • How to manage the movement of people during an event
  • How to reduce and manage conflict during an event
  • How to respond to emergencies during an event
  • How to provide information and advice during an event
  • Prepare for spectator events as an event steward.

Optional group A

  • How to contribute to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults during an event

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is assessed using an externally set, internally assessed learner pack containing open response questions and a practical observation checklist.

The open response assessment method is an ongoing assessment of learner knowledge throughout the duration of the course and requires learners to provide a short response to prescribed questions. The practical observation checklist should be used to assess learners against learning outcomes contained within Unit 7 of the qualification.

This assessment is undertaken under supervision in the role of an events steward at a minimum of one live event. Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding, and - where necessary - perform the relevant skills in order to show evidence of assessment coverage across all of the qualification specification.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

In order to take the assessment and enrol on the qualification, learners must be able to prove their identity by providing one of the following:

  • Signed UK photo card driving licence
  • Valid warrant card issued by HM Forces or Police
  • Other photographic ID such as employee ID card, student ID card, travel card or passport.

What can I do after this course?

To embark on a career in the security and events safety sector, you should consider completing other programmes within the suite of qualifications offered at Derby College, such as:

  • Door Supervisor
