This course is for individuals who would like to learn about canine first aid and the steps to take in a first aid emergency.
The Canine First Aid course is a great way to understand some of the basic measures that can be taken. On completion of the course, you will be issued with a College certificate.
You should have a genuine interest in dogs and should be keen to establish an understanding of canine first aid.
The course covers many first aid procedures including scene assessment and barrier use, CPR and rescue breathing, choking, control of serious bleeding, shock management, spinal injury management, splinting for fractures and dislocations, bandaging minor wounds and more.
Assessment is by observation of your practical performance throughout the day and some written theory assessments.
Pens and paper will be required.
You should wear sensible flat footwear and trousers/jeans. The College's own equipment will be used on the day.
Your Canine First Aid qualification will need refreshing/renewing in three years, which will keep you up to date with current methods of first aid.
You may wish to participate in further canine training that the College offers to enhance your knowledge. We run a variety of one-day, weekend and evening courses relating to dogs, including ID Chipping and Dog Grooming. Please see the Derby College Part-time Prospectus for a full list and details.
A mature student has praised a part-time Derby College course which allowed her to change career direction and launch the thriving business of her dreams.
Former dog warden Zoe Longdon, 43, said she gained essential support, skills and confidence at Broomfield Hall, while working for her City and Guilds Level 2 certificate in Dog Grooming.
Now Zoe is putting her knowledge into practice by running her own mobile dog grooming service called “Rovers Return”, from Newthorpe, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.
She said level of training provided by lecturer Sue Oliver was above that which can be expected at Level 2 – and the course offered good value for money in comparison to the privately run equivalents she researched.
“I started in business last summer. Now I’ve got 85 clients and I’m going from strength-to-strength. I’ve achieved my dream and I’m loving every day.”
