Course Summary

Does your job involve delivering short training courses?  Do you want these to be more effective?   Do you want to improve your skills and confidence, so that your participants are engaged and enthused?  If so, our short Train the Trainer course could be ideal for you.

This Level 3 Award in Planning and Delivering a Training Session will develop your knowledge, skills and confidence. You will explore the training cycle, how learning needs and learning contexts impact upon planning, and how to adapt your training plan.  You will have the opportunity to produce a training session plan, deliver the session to your peers and evaluate that session based on feedback. 

Additional units can be delivered to meet business needs, including using different training methods and the principles of teaching, training and assessment.

Entry requirements

  • A good standard of written and verbal English
  • Ideally, at least a Level 3 qualification
  • Experience of training other staff/employees

Course Content

You will study two units:

  • Planning a training session (2 credits)
  • Delivering a training session (2 credits)

Additional units can be delivered to meet business needs (for bespoke courses).  These can be negotiated upon request and include:

  • Using different training methods
  • Principles of teaching, training and assessment

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of a written assignment and planning, delivering and self-evaluating a micro-teach session.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You need stationery only.

What can I do after this course?

You can:

  • Progress to a Level 3 Award in Education and Training or Level 3 Certificate in Assessment of Vocational Achievement
  • Progress to Coaching, Facilitating Individual Learning or Equality and Diversity qualifications

Foundation degree is perfect stepping stone

Going to university simply wasn't an option when teaching assistant Caroline Keeton left school in the 1980s. But, more than 30 years on, the 51-year-old mum of two is about to start a top up degree course after completing a foundation degree in Children's and Young People's Services with Derby College. Caroline, who left school at 16 with just a handful of CSEs, discovered her interest in learning when she began work as a TA and took a course in childcare. Encouraged by how well she took to studying, she enrolled on a level 4 diploma at Derby College and a PTLS Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) course. Caroline – whose two adult daughters both studied for their A levels at Derby College's Joseph Wright Centre – now plans to use her degree to enhance her current role at a Long Eaton primary School. Rather than train to be a teacher after graduation she wants to become more involved in educational research projects within the existing TA job she loves. Going to Derby College has given Caroline the self-belief she needed to go on to higher education.

She added: "Caroline Friel, our lecturer, played a major part in my decision, and that of other students on my course, to go on and get a degree.
