This course is for individuals who would like an introduction to commercial dog grooming. It covers the procedures to follow for bathing and drying dogs and there may be some clipping and styling if time permits.
The course is ideal for anyone considering a career in dog grooming and for anyone wanting to learn techniques to groom their own dogs in the future.
It is also a great gift experience for someone who has a keen interest in dogs.
You should have a keen interest in dogs and a desire to establish an understanding of dog grooming.
The day covers the care and grooming of a dog. It includes bathing and drying and some clipping or hand stripping if time permits. Canine care will be covered and you will gain a taste of what it’s like to be a dog groomer and the methods and procedures you need to follow to groom safely.
Assessment is by observation of your practical performance throughout the day and a College certificate will be awarded on completion of the day.
The College runs a commercial salon and all equipment within the salon is used on the course. You are required to wear sensible flat footwear and trousers/jeans. Protective tabards can be worn when in the salon and they will be provided for your use on the day.
You may wish to participate in further grooming training that the College offers to enhance your skills. We run a range of one-day, weekend and evening courses relating to dogs and other animals as well as a variety of land-based topics - please see the Derby College Part-time Prospectus for a full list and details.
Carla Davies came to Derby College to re-train as a dog groomer and is now fulfilling her dream of working with animals after securing a part-time job at Kennel Gate in Nottingham.
As part of her course, she was matched to the job opportunity through the College’s pioneering recruitment service established with the REED NCFE Partnership. They alerted Carla – who had been an office worker since leaving school – to the job opportunity and helped her with her CV and interview techniques.
When I heard about the job opportunities and support available through the REED NCFE team, I decided to go for it and was over the moon when I was offered the job. It is a dream come true and I have also returned to Derby College for an evening course to gain more qualifications in dog grooming.
