Course Summary

This qualification is aimed at the learner who wants to pursue a career as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise.

You will cover anatomy and physiology, health and safety, planning and delivering gym-based sessions, healthy eating, communication and motivation skills.

Courses are planned to start in:

  • September - 24x Thursdays 6-9pm

Entry requirements

A basic understanding of anatomy and physiology is desirable.  So too is an understanding of health and safety practices within a gym-based environment.

You should have competency in English and maths to help with the theoretical aspects of the programme.

Although current gym membership is not required, you will be expected to use the gym as part of your ongoing professional development.

Course Content

The course is made up of several units which include:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Principles of exercise fitness and health
  • Client support
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Delivering gym-based exercise

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through:

  • multiple choice theory paper/eAssessment
  • practical examinations
  • worksheets

 

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to have suitable clothing for a gym environment, including indoor training footwear, personal towel and toiletries. You may wish to become a member at the College gym.

There are no additional costs, although you may choose to pay for membership towards becoming a Registered Exercise Professional (REPs)

Allows learners entry to REPs at Level 2 REPs 20 point CPD logo

What can I do after this course?

On completion of the course, you will be qualified for employment or may wish to continue training on the following REPs accredited courses:

  • Certificate in Personal Training
  • Award in Nutrition for Physical Activity
  • Award in Circuit Training
  • Diploma in Exercise Referral

Career options kick off for sports student Beth

Sports enthusiast Beth Wood is weighing up study options and a potential career thanks to her college course and work placement.The seventeen-year-old Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development student has completed the first year of her course with the offer of an apprenticeship.On work experience, as part of the course, she so impressed bosses at children' coaching company First Grade Sports that they first gave her a job teaching children in holidays and half terms.Now they have now gone one step further and offered an apprenticeship.Beth is also considering whether to go on to higher education at Derby College or whether to experience university life.

She said: "Without the college I wouldn't have got the chance of my work experience, or my job, or the offer an apprenticeship. My work experience helped me to understand how to teach different ages and abilities. It also helped improve my confidence, helping me feel comfortable in my own ability and knowledge."
