This course is a continuation of Stage 1 preparation or a stand-alone programme for those wanting to improve their technique on the flat and over fences.
We cover practical and theoretical stable management and ride through the Stage 2 syllabus. This can be found at http://www.bhs.org.uk
The riding part of the course encourages more competent horsemanship focusing on an effective seat, riding the horse as an individual and correctly jumping a show-jumping course of fences up to 2ft 6”.
Learners need to be at least 14 years old and able to walk, trot and canter confidently. They should also be comfortable riding without stirrups in walk, trot and canter.
Learners should also be able to jump a course of fences: maximum height of 2ft 6”.
In order to ensure the welfare of our horses we operate a personal weight restriction on no more than 13 stone. All riders will be weighed prior to the start of the course.

There will be no formal assessment although you will receive verbal feedback during and at the end of each lesson and will be set targets for improvement. At the end of the course, you will do a mock Stage 2 riding exam.

A former Derby College student is now supervisor at the horse yard where she first honed her equine management skills. Lauren Morley, 26, attended Broomfield College as a teenager and now also lecturers a new generation of students. Lauren now hopes to use her skills in the future to set up her own show jumping yard. Her career is underpinned by her two year BTEC National Diploma in Horse Management (level 3).
