Course Summary

The Hospitality and Tourism sector employs seven per cent of the working population, totalling one in every 14 jobs. Including replacement demand, an additional 660,200 people will need to be recruited up to 2020 -according to the industry's State of the Nation Report.

This Foundation Degree in International Hospitality Management, delivered in partnership with the University of Derby, will equip you with the skills to meet this demand.  Our lecturers are extremely knowledgeable and are from an industry background in addition to teaching for a number of years.

With its strong vocational emphasis, this course will develop the academic and professional skills and attributes you need to progress into employment at supervisory or trainee management level.  You will learn how to manage resources, people and information effectively, and you will develop valuable transferable skills like teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and time management. 

Once you have completed the course successfully, you can also choose to apply to progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management offered by the University of Derby.

This course will be delivered over four days a week at the Derby College Roundhouse Campus which includes our converted Engine Shed Restaurant with its industry-standard facilities. 

You will be timetabled in for 16 hours per week which includes taught sessions and tutorials. Self-study of approximately 15 hours will be in addition to this.

Work placements will be undertaken in establishments around Derby to help you further improve your skills. These will be organised by the College and will be incorporated into your timetable.

This course will run with a minimum of six students.  In 2015-16, nine students enrolled onto the course. 

This two-year programme is regulated by HEFCE and awarded by University of Derby. 

Entry requirements

You will need to have proven knowledge and experience of working within the hospitality and catering industry.

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

You will need: 

  • A minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points
  • Five GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A*- C

We also welcome applicants who lack appropriate recognised qualifications who have relevant work experience. 

International students will need to demonstrate the minimum IELTS score identified for this course in English in addition to having a successful interview.  Please contact the College for more information.

All applicants are subject to approval from the University of Derby.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment methods in the FdA International Hospitality Management programme include assignments, practical assessments, individual and group presentations, online assessments and research projects, along with the assessment of work-based learning to reflect the type of student and nature of the industry that they are entering.

Formative and summative assessments have been designed to ensure that students can demonstrate the skills, knowledge and understanding required by industry.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to purchase a Front of House uniform at the start of the course at a cost of £100.

Trips will also be undertaken on an optional basis. A reasonable payment of £150 will be required if you wish to participate in these.

What can I do after this course?

The knowledge and skills developed through this programme will provide students with opportunities to progress in a range of exciting careers in the hospitality and associated industries.

Careers could be in supervisory or junior management roles within hotels, restaurants, licensed retailing, contract catering, meetings and events venues and cruise ships.

Upon completion of the programme with a Merit profile, successful students can apply to progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management.

Foundation degree puts more choices on menu for catering student Jack

Derby College catering student Jack Bowler has extended his menu of career choices by taking a foundation degree in international hospitality management.Jack, who already holds level 2 and 3 qualifications in catering and hospitality via the college is now learning the management and front of house aspects of the hospitality industry as well as the catering side.During his level 3 course Jack also gained confidence-building experience through working at the college's Engine Shed fine dining restaurant at the Roundhouse.Jack, who was inspired to cook from a young age by his mum and gran, now plans to progress to level 5 and gain his BA Honours degree. He is currently working in the kitchens at Calke Abbey at weekends and will be taking on more shifts when he completes his foundation degree. Ultimately he hopes to find a job in his chosen field through educational work experience.

He said: "I love cooking but it's been interesting learning new things and finding out about the management aspects too. I enjoy being front of house as I've always liked interacting with customers.

"Derby College has such great facilities, including the new Fujitsu and Intel Innovation Hub which recently opened at the Roundhouse. The hub's got fantastic top of the range technology and quiet study areas."
