Employability Statement

Introduction

Employability encompasses a variety of skills and qualities which we aim to develop with students here at Derby College. The Employers we work with tell us that they are looking for a number of characteristics in their employees and Derby College has incorporated this feedback into the design and delivery of Higher Education programmes to ensure that learners have the skills they need to make them work-ready. At present, we are working towards developing Employability Profiles across our different Curriculum areas. We envisage this will aid students in gaining a thorough insight into the skills required to secure employment in their desired sector.

Subject Specific Knowledge

Understanding of specific topics within the field of expertise and ability to apply this knowledge in different contexts. This will be crucial for roles requiring in-depth knowledge within particular sectors.

Higher Level Skills

The ability to analyse, synthesise and summarise information critically, thinking independently; carry out primary and secondary research and make recommendations based upon critical evaluation of the findings; develop a systematic approach to solving problems. These skills will develop through constructive feedback from peers and lecturers.

Interpersonal & Transferable Skills

Applicable across a range of occupations and levels and include team working, communication, presentation, negotiation and people management skills. All skills are transferrable and here at Derby College we aim to promote an awareness of this to allow students to strive in their job applications and interviews. These skills will also be vital in securing work experience and voluntary placements.

Technical Abilities

The ability to use computers and industry specific software and other equipment and machinery. As technology is becoming simulated with learning there are also in classroom quizzes and VLE which the student will have the benefit of utilising. The system we use here at the college is Moodle.

Personal Qualities

Interpersonal qualities such as the ability to work under pressure; the skills of self-motivation, organisation and time management and the qualities of accuracy, entrepreneurship, cultural awareness and initiative.

These traits contribute highly to securing employment and are skills which we work towards helping our students achieve to prepare them for the world of work.

Looking Forward

Derby College HE programmes provide students with opportunities to develop the full breadth of employability skills.

All of our Higher Education programmes are delivered and assessed in a manner that develops our students' employability skills and qualities described above. They are subject specific and develop knowledge and understanding relevant to industry.

The Foundation Degree in Construction Management, validated by Nottingham Trent University, and delivered by Derby College has been approved by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

This is unique in being the first non-university based taught Construction Management FD to be accredited by the CIOB. Higher Levels skills are developed and assessed throughout the programmes by a variety of assessment methods.

Interpersonal and transferable skills are developed in a similar way and group assignments and student presentations are a common feature across all our Higher Education programmes.

Our education programmes include assessed observations of actual teaching practice thus developing real classroom management and teaching skills.

Technical skills are developed on our Engineering and Construction programmes through specialist modules that develop students' ability to use software or equipment used commercially.

Summary

Employability skills are designed into our programmes during the planning stage and thus lead to seamless development of students. Our holistic approach will help students develop as a whole person - empowered to manage their careers.
