Course Summary

The Media Moving Image and Audio Production: Enterprise Pathway has been specifically designed for students wishing to study a creative subject combined with Business, plus work experience, tutorial and personal and professional development.

The pathway enables you to develop specialist knowledge, understanding and skills in your chosen area, preparing you for employment in the digital media sector in job roles such as runner, assistant camera operator, assistant lighting camera person, freelance crew or promoter at festivals and live music events.

It could also provide a route to a higher education media-related programme such as Media Production, Media and Communications, Journalism and Media, and Digital Marketing.

The Media Moving Image and Audio Production pathway is designed to be the substantial part of your study programme. However, it can also be studied alongside other Applied General qualifications including Business, IT or A-level English.

This qualification is suitable for students who want to:

  • Prepare for employment in the creative media sector
  • Progress into media-related apprenticeships
  • Gain a Level 3 qualification to support further study in Further Education (FE) or to progress to Higher Education (HE) in Media Studies.

Entry requirements

Typically, you will have at least four GCSEs graded A*- C, including English Language and Maths. Alternatively you may have a relevant intermediate qualification at Merit grade or above, along with GCSE grade 4/grade C English Language and Maths.

It is important to note that a university application will probably require both English Language and Maths at grade 4/grade C or above.

In addition to these entry requirements, you will also need to attend a taster activity, where your practical skills and potential will be assessed.

Course Content

Component 1: Digital Media: Moving Image and Audio Production

This pathway will enable you to develop production skills and techniques to create moving image and audio media products.

You take the designated mandatory unit for this pathway - TV and Short Film Production. In this unit, you will develop a TV programme or short film from proposal to screen test, including recording and editing.

Throughout the course, there are opportunities to learn how to record cinematic quality footage including lighting techniques and editing or recording and editing sound elements for use in a soundtrack.

Other skills that will be developed include working in a team, communication, adaptability and evaluation. You will also have opportunities to find out from employers how the skills and knowledge you acquire are used in the workplace.

Component 2: Creative Business.

This qualification component will provide you with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the business environment and to focus on a specific aspect of business through applied learning.

The mandatory unit, The Business Environment, will give you an understanding of the wider external contexts in which businesses operate and of internal business functions and their interdependencies. The unit will allow you to appreciate how legal, financial, ethical and resource constraints can affect business behaviour, the influence that different stakeholders can have and how businesses must respond.

In the Customers and Communication unit, you will learn the purpose, methods and importance of communication in business and the appropriateness of different forms of communication for different situations. You will develop the skills that will help you create a rapport with customers and will have the opportunity to practise and develop  business communication skills. You will also learn about the legal constraints, ethical and security issues that affect how businesses store, share and use information.

How will I be assessed?

Component 1: Digital Media: Moving Image and Audio Production is assessed using a combination of:

  • Three mandatory units
  • A minimum of two pathway specialist units 

Component 2: Creative Business is assessed using a combination of:

  • One mandatory unit
  • One specialist subject unit

If you don’t achieve a Pass in a unit, it will be graded Unclassified. You must get at least a Pass for every unit to be awarded the qualification.

Qualifications are graded using a Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction* (and Unclassified) structure.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to provide a memory stick and a set of mini-headphones for your studies

What can I do after this course?

Further Study

This qualification could form part of a basis for application to a higher education course (degree, foundation degree or HNC/HND) in a Creative Media-related discipline.

Careers

Students who complete this course will have a range of options, as the qualification does not restrict future progression into one particular role.

Examples of potential career progression opportunities include job roles such as runner, assistant camera operator, assistant lighting camera person, freelance crew or promoter at festivals and live music events.

Designs on a career in the creative industry

Former Media Studies learner James Radford is revelling in his first job with a creative agency. He has secured a role as a Production Assistant with Derby based Matchstick Design.

His main responsibility is to help ensure smooth work flow in the studio – taking briefs, dealing with suppliers and seeing jobs through to delivery. He’s also preparing images for use in wide ranging projects and assisting with research.

With further experience, he aims to take on a more senior role on the creative side of the business.

It’s my first job and I’m sure my time at Derby College helped me to get it. My studies gave me skills, confidence and knowledge of film, which helped a lot.

I would definitely recommend the Media Studies course to other people interested in a career in the creative industry. It was the right choice for me: the standard of teaching was good and we covered the subjects I’m most interested in.
