The Level 2 Intermediate Interactive Media: Creative Pathway has been specifically designed for students wishing to study a single creative subject plus, work experience, tutorial and personal and professional development.
If you don’t already have a grade C  or above at GCSE in English and Maths, you’ll continue to study these elements which will form a significant part of your programme.
Digital media plays an important role in many areas of our everyday lives and is also an essential part of the UK economy. There is a demand from employers for an increasingly skilled and technically literate workforce as more and more media products are produced digitally.
The Intermediate Interactive Media programme will assess the application of creative media skills through their practical use. It will also provide you with essential knowledge, transferable skills and tools to improve your learning in other subjects. The aim is to enhance your employability when you leave education and contribute to your personal development and future economic wellbeing. The programme will nurture your independence, creativity and awareness of the digital media sector.
Studying Intermediate Interactive Media will equip you with a range of creative media skills and provide you with opportunities to develop, in context, desirable transferable skills such as research, planning and review, working with others and communicating creative concepts effectively. Through the use of these skills, you will ultimately be creating fit-for-purpose creative media products.

If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take your previous experience into consideration. Applicants will be interviewed, will undertake an initial assessment in English and maths, and must present a portfolio of current work or undertake a related project/task prior to or post the interview to assess their suitability.
Planning is an essential part of working in the creative and digital media sector. The pre-production element of the course will enable you to understand techniques used in the sector, as well as to gain the knowledge and skills to create digital media products and explore their application. It will also build your understanding of the client brief, time frames, deadlines and preparation techniques that form part of the planning and creation process.

Digital graphics feature in many areas of our lives, and play a very important part in today’s world. The digital media sector relies heavily on visual stimulants within products to communicate messages effectively.

The aim of this unit is for you to understand the basics of digital graphics editing for the creative and digital media sector.
Pre-production skills involves a written exam that lasts one hour and 15 minutes and is set and marked by the Awarding Body [60 marks].

Creating Digital Graphics is centre assessed and moderated by the Awarding Body [60 marks].
The centre assessed tasks will be practical tasks in the context of an assignment, selected from the Awarding Body’s bank of model assignments.
You will be required to purchase a basic toolkit costing approximately £25 based on a list provided at enrolment (concessions are available subject to status). You will also need a journal or notebook at all times throughout the course.
On successful completion of the programme to Merit or Distinction standard – as well as completion of GCSE English and Maths to grade 4 [C] – you can progress to an advanced course such as Advanced Digital Media Design or Moving Image and Audio Production via application and portfolio interview.
This course also prepares you for a junior employment position in the media-based industries, with the potential for promotion with the help of further training and qualifications
A company director who studied BTEC multimedia at Derby College is spearheading a key event showcasing ideas and innovation in the city. Helen Clark, 32, attended the former Wilmorton site on a two year course when she was just 16. She is now a director with city-based Clark CX, a website conversion rate optimisation consultancy, which was founded by her husband Pete. Helen said Derby College gave her a crucial insight into the workplace and the course was broad-based enough to allow her to choose in which direction she wanted to take her career. After college she took a graphic design degree in Norwich, which led to design roles in Bath, Mansfield and then Derby. Pete separately attended Derby College on an art foundation course, and Helen joined his business two years ago. They are now putting together TEDxDerby 2016 at QUAD on May 21. The event is a forum which will showcase creative and innovative ideas from speakers predominantly based in, or connected, to Derby.
Helen said: "The BTEC course was like an introduction to the real world and how people work in the industry. We covered a wide range from illustration to graphic design and video work, which helped me to decide which field I wanted to go into."
