Course Summary

This study programme has been designed for learners whose focus is on achieving English and/or Maths GCSE at grade C (4) or better. The study programme will cover fitness testing, sports leadership and personal development. A focus on employability skills and customer service will ensure learners are actively carrying out work experience placements at regular events throughout the year. These will often require a commitment to weekend events and early starts.

Learners will need to be focussed on the completion of their skills programme in order to advance to higher level qualifications and to open up greater chances of employment. In both practical and theoretical settings, you will study what the Active Leisure sector can offer and where the employment growth markets are within the sector.

Entry requirements

You will need to complete an interview and screening test in maths and English. The entry requirements for this course are five GCSEs graded between 5-3. Your individual timetable will be developed around your skills needs.

The study programme will focus on the achievement of English and maths, with employability, fitness, personal development, sports leadership and work experience supporting the rest of the timetable.

You are expected to maintain high standards of discipline, punctuality and attendance. It is essential that you work to the deadlines set or you risk the chance of not achieving your programme of study.

Practical sessions are compulsory, so you must be physically able to
take part in both indoor and outdoor sessions. You will also be expected to volunteer on selected dates throughout the year (including weekends).

You will need to be aware that certain volunteering events take place at weekends and you will be expected to attend these.

How will I be assessed?

You will build a portfolio based around evidence generated by the various assessment methods in each unit. You are expected to work on multiple assessments at any one time. You will be assessed through practical demonstrations, logbooks and performance records, written reports and essays, presentations, workbooks, discussions and vivas. Maths and English will be assessed through course work, controlled assessment and final exam.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You are expected to purchase a uniform to wear at College and for practical sessions. Kit costs will vary depending on the items purchased: the cost is non-refundable once the items are ordered.

Former sports student Ellie prepares for coaching trip to Australia

Sports coach Ellie Wheeldon-Jones is planning to go to Australia to teach swimming after successfully completing a foundation degree course in sports coaching at Derby College. Ellie, who has always been sporty, would like to travel and take a break from studying before deciding whether or not to take a third-year top up degree course. Like her sister Sophie, who is now a personal trainer, and her boyfriend Mykylo, a semi-professional cricketer, Ellie initially took the BTEC sports sciences course at Derby College after leaving school following GCSEs.She then went on to take her foundation degree at Broomfield Hall and is currently working as a children's swimming coach as well as teaching tampolining to adults.

Ellie said: "One of the best things about the foundation degree course was the amount of one-to-one attention you receive. Our groups were small so the lecturers had more time to dedicate to you. It was hard work but I enjoyed it and felt very comfortable at Broomfield."
Ellie has participated in many sports including gymnastics, athletics and running during and since her schooldays. She has also swum at county level.
