Lexis is a full-time programme for 16 to 19-year-old learners whose first language is not English. Its overall objective is to help learners improve their English and gain qualifications to enable them to progress into further education or employment.
No formal qualifications are required. The course is free to the majority of learners, unless they are classed as an international student (more details available on request).
The main qualification, City & Guilds Functional English, is delivered for eight hours per week, Functional Maths for four hours, and Functional ICT for two hours.
Enrichment, work experience and tutorials are all incorporated in the 17-hour-per-week full-time programme.
Learners are assessed and then placed into groups according to their level of English. This will range from pre-Entry to Level 1.
The enrichment, tutorial and work experience programme is designed to build learners’ self-esteem and confidence, enabling them to gain the skills required to progress to further study or the world of work.
English, Maths and ICT are assessed by an end-of-year exam.
Learners can advance to the next level of the course or – once they have gained the appropriate level of English – can progress to other study programmes within the College or into the world of work.
