Course Summary

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Beauty Therapy progresses the skills and knowledge developed on the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course. It is focussed on producing highly proficient, occupationally competent, professional beauty therapists who can perform a wide variety of treatments and services and are 'job ready'.

The course includes developing a range of general beauty therapy treatment techniques, including massage. This qualification is most suited to students who wish to advance in their profession or to become salon managers and/or salon owners. 

Entry requirements

You need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications and practical aptitude. You will need:

  • a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including English and/or Maths (grade 4 or above) and Science.
  • an Intermediate Diploma in the chosen subject to a Merit or Distinction standard

You will have an interview and initial assessment in maths and English and will take a skills test. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment. If you are successful, you will be allocated a place to study.

If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take into consideration your previous experience in your chosen subject. 

Course Content

The units you will cover include:
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Provide body electrical treatments
  • Provide facial electrical treatments
  • Provide body massage treatments
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
  • Provide micro dermabrasion treatments

Please be aware that the awarding body may amend unit titles from time to time and they may be subject to change.

There is also a range of optional units, about which our Beauty team will give you advice.

You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.

 

How will I be assessed?

There is an overall final grading of Pass, Merit or Distinction.

  • Synoptic Assessment -  end practical assessment
  • External Assessment - end written assessment


In addition to timetabled classes, there is provision for independent study time. Students will undertake independent learning, investigation and research and will bring this to present and share in subsequent classes.

 

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

There is a kit and uniform to purchase.  Full details will be given at your interview.

What can I do after this course?

Further study
You could consider a Level 4 programme on which you will further your professional knowledge and techniques as well as continuing to develop your skills in maths and English.
 
Careers
You can advance your career in beauty salons and health spas or on cruise liners.

All set for a career in film make-up

With her sights set on a career as a make-up and prosthetics designer in the world of film, talented Rachel Dennis has already stepped into the spotlight.

She came third in the regional finals of the World Skills competition, having spent many hours creating a prosthetic of the Jabberwocky game character. At our 2014 Peak Awards, she also received the SENSI Hairdressing, Holistic and Beauty Therapy prize – sponsored by Pompadour – for her commitment and superb practical abilities.

Rachel went on to secure a coveted university place to study Advanced Media Make-up in Grimsby, one of only three accredited courses in the UK.

I first became interested in makeup design when I watched films like Lord of the Rings so I was delighted to hear that Derby College ran a specialist course in the subject. Winning the Peak Award completed a fantastic year and having the World Skills experience will certainly be good for my future CV.
