Course Summary

Aimed at students who are working in healthcare settings such as hospitals, GP practices, medical centres and nursing homes, this course enables you to develop knowledge, understanding and skills to progress your career in the health sector.

Entry requirements

You need to be working in paid employment in a healthcare environment as a healthcare worker in a maternity and paediatric setting. You will need to be working for a minimum of 16 hours per week.

Course Content

You will undertake the Level 3 Health Diploma specialist Maternity and Paediatric pathway. Units include:

  • Promote communication in health and social care
  • Engage in personal development
  • Promote equality and inclusion
  • Principles of implementing duty of care
  • Promote person-centred approaches
  • Promote and implement health and safety
  • Promote good practice in handling information
  • Safeguarding
  • Your role
  • Principles of infection prevention and control
  • Causes and spread of infection
  • Cleaning, decontamination and waste management
  • Undertake physiological measures

How will I be assessed?

You will attend fortnightly class sessions with the tutor to fulfil the knowledge evidence requirements of the programme.  You will be allocated an assessor who will visit you in the workplace to action plan your progress, observe your practice and assess your portfolio of work.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

Your employer will need to provide you with any Personal Protective Equipment required legally and to help you to undertake your role safely.

What can I do after this course?

Further Study

You can progress to an Access to Health course, Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care, or a Pre-nursing programme.


You can advance your career in roles such as senior health care worker or support worker.
