Course Summary

Improve Your Riding is designed for those who wish to enhance their understanding of horses and their ability to ride. This course is tailor-made to meet the needs of participants and we find most riders enrol from one course to another, using it as the equivalent of a weekly riding lesson.

Entry requirements

Learners must be at least 14 years of age. You will be able to walk, trot and canter confidently. You should also be able to ride comfortably without stirrups.

In order to ensure the welfare of our horses, we operate a personal weight restriction of no more than 13 stone.  All riders will be weighed prior to the start of the course.

Course Content

Riders learn how to exercise a horse correctly in walk, trot and canter, assessing and improving its way of going. You will also jump small fences and work over grid. There is a lot of focus on the riding position and rider balance.

How will I be assessed?

There will be no formal assessment, although you will receive verbal feedback during and at the end of each lesson and will be set targets for improvement.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will be required to supply your own:

  • Correctly fitted and up to current safety standard riding hat
  • Correctly fitted and up to current safety standard riding gloves
  • Correctly fitted and up to current safety standard riding footwear
  • Correctly fitted and up to current safety standard body protectors

Derby College jumpstarts Lauren’s equine career

A former Derby College student is now supervisor at the horse yard where she first honed her equine management skills. Lauren Morley, 26, attended Broomfield College as a teenager and now also lecturers a new generation of students. Lauren now hopes to use her skills in the future to set up her own show jumping yard. Her career is underpinned by her two year BTEC National Diploma in Horse Management (level 3).

"The course gave me a good understanding of yard management and equine health and there was always support available if you needed it. It was also very practical, which I liked."
