Course Summary

The Higher National Diploma is a one-year part-time course which is ideal for students who wish to convert their HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering into a HND.

The programme is offered on a day-release basis which allows you to combine your existing professional role with your studies.  You will study eight modules which will cover a broad range of engineering subjects, identified in consultation with local industry experts and delivered by lecturers with the relevant industry and academic experience.  The assignments are linked to modern industrial engineering technology and will enable you to make a positive impact within your current organisation.

You will study for nine hours per week.  You will need to equal this time working outside the College on assessments, research, revision and other learning activities. If applicants have not covered the core units within their HNC, additional units may need to be covered.  This could be done over an additional year or within the year of study.

All engineering companies demand well-qualified, versatile and adaptable staff with high-level skills and knowledge.  This programme also opens up potential opportunities for further study including progression to a full honours degree.

This programme will run with a minimum of six students.  In 2015-16 six students were enrolled on the HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme.

Delivered at our Roundhouse Campus adjacent to the Derby city centre train station, this programme is regulated by HEFCE and the qualification is awarded by Pearson Edexcel.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues.  You will need:

  • A HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

You will also need:

  • Four GCSEs, including GCSE English and Maths at grades A*- C and a relevant science qualification

or

  • An Access to HE qualification in a related field at Pass level

You should also show clear evidence of interest in the subject area and motivation to study at higher education level, good attendance and punctuality, and the ability to work independently.

International students will need to demonstrate a minimum IELTS score in English in addition to having a successful interview.  Please contact the College for more information.

Course Content

Modules include:

  • Applications of Power Electronics
  • Further Analytical Methods for Engineers
  • Electronic Principles
  • Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles
  • Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Managing the Work of Individuals and Teams
  • Quality and Business Improvement
  • Quality Assurance and Management

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a combination of programme assignments, practical exercises, case studies and written assignments.  Vocational skills are also assessed so that attributes such as evaluation, creativity and analysis can be formally credited.  Work of a particularly high quality is rewarded though Merit and Distinction grades.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

No

What can I do after this course?

The level of independent research and critical thinking completed on this course, as well as the assessment methodology, helps to prepare students for further study at degree level.  You can progress to the Derby College one-year BEng (Hons) Integrated Engineering top-up programme, validated by Sheffield Hallam University, providing you meet the entry requirements.

As a vocational qualification, the HND also provides students with a range of skills and knowledge that can be readily applied in the workplace and may lead to opportunities for career progression.

Welding student Rosie forges ahead in fabrications

Student welder Rosie Dales is forging ahead in the male-dominated world of fabrication thanks to Derby College. Rosie, 24, is set to take a Level 3 NVQ in Fabrication and Welding. She is also adding skills to a previous Level 2 qualification which she did not gain through an earlier provider. Rosie, who was born deaf and is a skilled lipreader, uses a hearing aid to boost what sound she can hear. She praised the teaching focus of her Derby College tutor and said her fellow students were "deaf aware", which was helpful. After working unpaid for two weeks, Rosie landed an apprenticeship with her grandfather's firm, Dales Fabrications, in Ilkeston. She found that she loved the work and the company is now funding her college training.

Rosie said: "I'm really enjoying the college work. The tutor is focussed on the students and I'm making good progress.

"I think it's going well. I'm taking small steps at a time. After I qualify I might go on to a higher qualification and see where that takes me. We'll see."
