Course Summary

This is an established and dynamic higher education programme validated by Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).  It has been specifically designed to equip graduates with the skills and attributes to enable them to progress within their chosen careers in either Construction Management or Quantity Surveying to a more senior level.

This validated Derby College programme offers an articulated route to the NTU BSc (Hons) Construction Management and BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying for successful applicants.  The course is designed to take specific advantage of the candidate's professional construction work experience, work-based knowledge and working environment.

The course is delivered on a part-time, day release basis by experienced construction professionals and specialists who develop the right attitudes, aptitude, knowledge and skills needed to be successful within the professional construction sector.  The programme consists of 12 mandatory units (four units per year) and is delivered via lectures, workshops and tutorials which are designed to develop high-calibre independent students ready for industry and/or further study at university. There will be up to six hours contact time per day and a significant amount of independent study is expected throughout all three years of the programme.

This programme will run with a minimum of six students.  In 2016-17 we enrolled nine students onto the programme.

The programme is regulated by HEFCE and takes place one day a week over three years at the Higher Education Centre within the Stephenson Building at the Derby College Roundhouse Campus.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues. You will need:

  • A minimum of 64 UCAS points in science-related qualifications or a Level 3 professional construction related qualification
  • To be in relevant full-time employment within the professional construction sector in a role which is directly related to either Construction Management or Commercial/Professional Quantity Surveying.

You will also need:

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) to include English and Maths

Other levels of entry, such as an approved Construction Bridging Programme, will be considered on a merit basis by the Programme Co-ordinator.

We also welcome applicants who lack institutional qualifications but have significant and relevant professional construction industrial experience.  All such applicants will be interviewed and may be set an appropriate piece of work upon which a judgement will be made, taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.

While on the programme, you will be assessed using a variety of methods: assignments, reports, group and individual presentations, academic poster presentations, phase tests and exams.  All assessment methods have been designed to focus on skills specific to the industry while incorporating key transferable employability skills.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You need drawing equipment, a calculator, text books, portfolios (for assignment submissions), and general stationery supplies.  Although it is not a prerequisite, it is helpful for students to have their own laptop/iPad to enable them to meet the required independent study demands.

What can I do after this course?

Students who successfully complete and pass the course will have the opportunity to apply to progress to the part-time Level 5/6 degree programme at NTU in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying and ultimately to gain professional status as members of the CIOB and/or Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).  An option to apply to study at Masters level may be available after completion of your BSc (Hons) degree.

Jonathan Barcz

Surveying a bright future in construction

Joining the Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment gave Jonathan Barcz a real head start in his career as a quantity surveyor.

Jonathan is one of the talented learners who have benefited from our Professional Construction Employment and Skills Academy, which offers work placements and mentoring support from local employers.

The opportunities led to him securing an apprenticeship at UK Construction in Derby and he is now studying the part-time BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying at Nottingham Trent University, sponsored by his company.

Jonathan was also named the Professional Construction Learner of the Year at our 2014 Peak Awards, thanks to his focused approach to his studies and his outstanding marks.

I’m so pleased that I joined the Derby College Employment and Skills Academy which opened so many doors for me and has given me the opportunity to work and continue my education in this profession.
