Course Summary

This programme leads to a nationally recognised award for trainee dental nurses working in a dental practice. It enables you to gain the qualification needed to fulfil the General Dental Council requirements for registration and to take your career forward. 

Entry requirements

You must be in paid employment as a dental nurse.

Course Content

Ten sector-specific units should be completed to achieve the qualification. They include subjects such as:
  • Infection Control
  • Health and Safety
  • Preventative and Restorative Procedures
  • Radiography
  • Mathematics Functional Skills at Level 2
  • English Functional Skills at Level 2

How will I be assessed?

You will attend class sessions to fulfil the knowledge evidence requirements and build a portfolio of evidence.  You will be allocated a qualified assessor who will visit you in the workplace to action plan your progress, observe your practice and assess your portfolio of work.

What can I do after this course?

Further study
There is the option to take further training courses for more specialist roles in dental nursing, hygiene, therapy, practice management or teaching. Learners sometimes progress to higher qualifications in related fields such as radiography.

Careers
Once trained, dental nurses can progress their career to become dental therapists and hygienists or to work in areas such as oral health promotion, dental practice management, nursing, radiography and conscious sedation.
